Shirley's Story

The statement, “necessity is the mother of invention” became a reality for me when I found myself a single mother of five young daughters. Baking for neighbors became one of the many stay-at-home jobs I did to support my young family. We lived in a small town in Alberta, Canada; opportunities to school teach or to find valuable employment were scarce.

Well, to make a long story short, baking worked! I loved baking: I loved the challenge of it, I loved the creativity of it, and I loved the rewarding joy of it. Baking not only became a valuable source of income for us, but it was also a valuable source of employment for my girls as they grew into various responsibilities.

Thank You, Utah!

After the death of my parents, I chose to sell my home and our baking business in Canada, which by 1992 had grown into a viable business, providing buns and sweet rolls to various stores throughout Southern Alberta. I enrolled at BYU with the intention of pursuing a new career. However, in 1996 I found myself at the mercy of “necessity” once again; and through the many tender mercies of my Father in Heaven, I was able to start this bakery in Provo, Utah. My children are grown now.

Michelle and Renae (two of my daughters) are presently a huge part of our business and my son-in-law, Maicol (married to Renae), manages the baking production! We love old-fashioned recipes that use all the same ingredients that you would use at home. 100% from scratch baking and cooking is a ton of labor, but so worth it! We have delicious food!

“Shirley's is a great local bakery. The sweet rolls are top notch. Soft, chewy, and tender bread topped with a generous amount of fluffy frosting.”

“I LOVE Shirley’s! They have the best sweet rolls! My absolute favorite are the blueberry rolls with cream cheese frosting but I also love the cinnamon and raspberry. You really can’t go wrong with any of their desserts.”
